Richard Frederick Henry Cureton, Age 20

Private, 57174, 9th Battalion, Welsh Regiment.

Welsh Regiment Cap Badge
Welsh Regiment Cap Badge.

Richard was the eldest son of the family; he had been born in Dawley and was living at 4 Portley, Dawley at the time of his enlistment, which had occurred whilst he was in Newtown, Wales. His younger brother William saw active service in Mesopotamia when still only 18 years old.

He had prior to enlisting worked at the Lightmoor brick works and had joined up in June 1915 with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers (29269); He had at some point been transferred to the Welsh Regiment and was serving with them when he received his wounds that he would die of. Richard died on the 31st January 1917 and surprisingly for someone listed as dying of wounds does not have a known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Ref: Pier and Face 7 A and lO A
